New Manager Brings Gerontology and Religious Studies Background

Pitkin County welcomed its first new Senior Services Manager in three decades last week. Former Boulder resident Chad Federwitz took the helm from longtime Director Marty Ames who retired on June 3rd.

During Ames’ tenure the Senior Services Department grew from a one-person department into the operation it is today with a staff of many including an extensive network of community partners all focused on the wellbeing, inclusion and integration of seniors.

Federwitz will complete a Master’s Degree in Gerontology this summer and also holds a Master’s in Religious Studies. His experience working with senior citizens includes over six years at the Boulder-area Balfour Senior Living Community as Life Enrichment Director and Chaplain in the Alzheimer’s memory care center.

“Chad's experience, education, leadership and passion for serving seniors will be a tremendous asset to Senior Services department, the Health and Human Services Management team and to Pitkin County as a whole,” said Pitkin County Health and Human Services Director, Nan Sundeen.

Federwitz has relocated to Carbondale with his partner, Sarah, and their dog Rocky. In his free time he likes to hike and practice T'ai Chi and Qigong.

“I am passionate about working with seniors,” said Federwitz. “I have had the good fortune of knowing most of my great grandparents and all of my grandparents and I think having a particularly close relationship with my great grandmother had a big influence on my interest in working with and learning from seniors,” Federwitz said.
