[ARCHIVED] 2017 Pitkin County Cares Volunteer Service Awards Announced

Seven outstanding Roaring Fork Valley Residents and one volunteer organization will be honored by Pitkin County Commissioners  for their volunteer work in Pitkin County at their regular meeting on November 15th. Now in its 17th year, the goal of the county’s volunteer award program is to honor individuals and groups for their outstanding service, leadership and civic involvement. There are several award categories with the overall volunteer award in memory of the late Greg Mace who died in 1986 on a training climb with Mountain Rescue Aspen on South Maroon peak. 


2017 Honorees:


Greg Mace Award: Tony Vagneur

For his volunteer work as a champion for the Aspen Historical Society on its Board of Directors and as an Aspen history tour guide. 


Outstanding Volunteer Organization Award: Mountain Rescue Aspen

For its dedication to searching for, rescuing and recovering those who have mishaps in the mountains.


Youth Award: Terry Leitch

For his volunteer work with the Aspen Buddy Program at their annual summer camping experience.


Environment Award: Ruthie Brown

For her volunteer work on the Pitkin County Healthy Rivers Board and Citizens Climate Lobby. 


Community Pride Award: Carl Buckingham

For his volunteer work on Pearl Pass


Good Samaritan Award: Bob Cook

For his volunteer work with the Aspen Elks Club’s Veteran’s Affairs Committee.


Good Samaritan Award: Jack Kennedy

For his volunteer work with Challenge Aspen as a board member and all-around helper. 


Exceptional One-Time Event: Sue Kendig

For her volunteer work helping to raise $1 million for the Aspen Historical Society’s Archive building renovation. 


Pitkin County Commissioners will honor the recipients at a special reception and ceremony during their regular, televised meeting beginning at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 15th in the Dunaway Community Room at the Pitkin County Library.  The ceremony will be televised on CGTV Channel 11 and may also be viewed at www.pitkincounty.com ‘watch meetings.’
