[ARCHIVED] Growing Senior Meals Program

ss2

One of Aspen’s Best Kept “Secrets”

With an estimated 4,000 people living in Pitkin County over the age of 60, Pitkin County Senior Services strives to fulfill its mission “to facilitate quality of life and independence for individuals over 60.” To kick off the new year, Senior Services has added an additional lunchtime meal day on Thursdays; an affordable, nutritious meal is now available four days a week on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The Pitkin County senior lunch program has long provided meals to local and visiting seniors at a suggested donation of $4 to $5. Guests under the age of 60 are invited to dine for a charge of $9, after all seniors have been served.

“This is a great venue for social interaction while enjoying great, affordable meals,” said Senior Services Manager, Chad Federwitz. “We pride ourselves on the delicious and nutritious food prepared by our kitchen staff,” Federwitz said.

The Pitkin County Senior Center serves approximately 9,000 meals a year, 900 of which are home-delivered to people who are homebound, either temporarily or long-term.

“People coming here for the first time are often surprised at how many familiar faces they see. It’s a great place to reconnect with old friends,” said Federwitz. “We offer many programs in addition to lunch, including exercise classes, educational programs, activity groups, computer assistance, holiday celebrations, entertainment, and more.”

The Pitkin County Senior Center is open Monday - Friday 8:30 to 4:30, except holidays. Lunches are served from 12:00-12:30, each day except Tuesdays. Reservations are required by calling (970) 429-6161. Transportation assistance is available. Seniors are encouraged to sign up to receive the senior newsletter, which includes a monthly activity calendar and lunch menu among other articles of interest to seniors. More information about local senior programs is available at www.pitkinseniors.com, by calling (970) 920-5432 or emailing seniors@pitkincounty.com.
