In the latest step toward facilitating high-speed internet in the far-reaches of Pitkin County, Pitkin County’s Broadband partner Mammoth Networks is now seeking proposals from Internet Service Providers who can bring the much sought-after service to the Roaring Fork Valley.
This is the latest step toward facilitating high-speed internet in the far-reaches of Pitkin County where the internet has been historically non-existent or slow. The providers selected by Mammoth through the RFP process will have access to Pitkin County’s communication and mountaintop translator towers to reach customers.
Retail internet providers are expected to offer high-speed internet to customers in the Crystal River Valley, mid-valley and the Old Snowmass areas by early summer 2019. Establishments must be within or near “line of sight” of the Elephant Mountain, Williams Peak, and Crown Mountain translator towers to access and purchase services from the providers.
“This is the first phase of Pitkin County’s Broadband Initiative,” said Pitkin County’s Broadband Coordinator, Kara Silbernagel. If all goes well we should be able to reach customers in most Pitkin County drainages by 2020,” Silbernagel said.
The Elephant Mountain translator tower was refurbished last summer
to accommodate high-speed internet providers.
Not all of the demand for high-speed internet in the far reaches of Pitkin County can be met by existing translator tower infrastructure. Development of additional towers and relay sites is included in the three-year plan for Broadband. Future phases include expansion from mountain top sites to the valley floor to reach more of the County’s currently underserved customers.
Mammoth Network is maintaining and installing the infrastructure in Pitkin County that will allow internet service providers to offer 10, 25 and 40 megabit service packages to the public.
