A property tax exemption is available for tax year 2023, affecting taxes payable in 2024 for qualifying seniors and surviving spouses of those who previously qualified.
Seniors must be 65 as of Jan. 1, 2023 and have owned and resided in the property as their primary residence for the last 10 consecutive years or as of December 31, 2012. Fifty percent of the first $200,000 of actual value of their primary residence is exempt and the assessed value is recalculated. The state reimburses the county for taxes that are exempted.
Once approved, the exemption remains on your account; applicants do not need to reapply. To receive an application, please call the Pitkin County Assessor’s Office (970) 920-5160. The senior application deadline is July 15, 2023. This exemption is for all qualified seniors throughout the state of Colorado.
