[ARCHIVED] Pitkin County acquires Dottie Fox Overlook

ASPEN – Pitkin County Open Space and Trails formally acquired the Dottie Fox Overlook today.

The 1.3-acre property near the top of Watson Divide offers outstanding views of the Snowmass and Capitol Creek valleys, framed by the Elk Mountains in the distance. Improvements to better identify the parking area at the overlook and provide a spot to sit and admire the view will be defined in a future plan.

The parcel was transferred to county ownership as part of a development approval.

The county has dedicated the overlook in the memory of Fox, one of the founders of Wilderness Workshop and a tireless advocate for the creation of wilderness lands in the Hunter-Fryingpan, Maroon Bells-Snowmass and Collegiate Peaks areas. Fox was also a trustee of the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies and a watercolorist who taught at Colorado Mountain College for 18 years. An iconic figure in the Roaring Fork Valley, Fox also worked for creation of the West Elks and Raggeds wilderness areas and co-founded the Great Old Broads for Wilderness.
